The Walk-Off for Cancer is just 3 months away!
As we gear up for the walk, we wanted to share an incredible story of a young man who is the inspiration behind our top fundraising team, Brave for Benjamin.
On December 11, 2015, just days after his seventh birthday, Benjamin Burke went to the pediatrician for a suspected ear infection. Later that evening, his doctor instructed his parents to bring him to the hospital where he was diagnosed with T-cell acute lymphoblastic leukemia. He immediately started undergoing treatment at Lurie Children’s Hospital in Chicago, and is currently nine months into his three-and-a-half-year treatment plan.
Last winter, Benjamin, an avid baseball fan, had the opportunity to meet Anthony during one of his monthly visits to Lurie Children’s. Anthony and Benjamin got to hang out, talk baseball and Anthony invited him out to a game at Wrigley. Soon they were the best of friends.
Their friendship didn’t end there though, Benjamin told his parents that he wanted to return the favor and help his new friend Anthony. Over Labor Day weekend Benjamin held a lemonade stand to raise money for the Anthony Rizzo Family Foundation. “I decided it would be good to give the money from the lemonade stand to the Anthony Rizzo Family Foundation. When you have cancer, you don’t feel good sometimes. Anthony can use the money we got to help other kids with cancer.”
His family all banned together and started helping Benjamin with his lemonade stand, “In a matter of days we Facebook marketed, had friends help with a tent, tables, decor etc. and I baked about 420 brownies and Oreo Burke Bars ” Jennie Burke, Benjamin’s mom said. Benjamin along with his family and friends raised more than $20,000 for Team Brave for Benjamin.
We are so proud of Benjamin. Benjamin is just a seven year old boy, who is fighting cancer himself. He could have used this lemonade stand to raise money for his own medical bills, but he opted to use it to help others. Even though he is in need, he put other people before himself.
If Benjamin can do it, so can all of you!!!
